Eternal Journey
Velma Celesta Cooke, 59, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Her presence was a gift to all who knew her—marked by warmth, wisdom, laughter, and an unforgettable smile.

The Beginning
Velma was born on September 18, 1966, at Gila General Hospital in Globe, Arizona, to James Elvin Cooke and Colesta Upshaw Cooke. As the youngest of her siblings, she was deeply cherished and affectionately known by many names “Velmoo” by her Aunt Puff, “Velma Lelma” by her mother and siblings, and “Nana Mama” by her beloved grandchildren. Her early years were spent in Cibecue and Fort Apache, Arizona, before her family settled in Phoenix when she was three years old. Raised in a home rooted in strong family values, love, and togetherness, Velma grew up alongside her siblings Carolyn, Tyrone, Denise, and Brenda, learning the importance of unity, loyalty, and care for one another—principles she carried throughout her life. Velma’s bright, dimpled smile and joyful spirit were constants. She had a way of lighting up every room she entered and leaving a lasting impression on every heart she touched.

Educational Journey
Velma attended Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in the Roosevelt School District—an experience made even more memorable because her mother was one of her teachers. She later attended Percy L. Julian Junior High School and graduated from South Mountain High School.

Professional Life
Velma dedicated much of her career to the medical field, serving with compassion and care at Vital Care Infusion, Banner Health, and Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Her work reflected her natural ability to nurture and support others. In addition to her professional career, Velma had an entrepreneurial spirit. She created artisan soaps and oils and operated a mobile notary service—ventures that showcased her creativity, independence, and drive.

A Life Full of Passion and Personality
Velma was a true lover of music—a devoted fan of gospel as well as the classics from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. She especially loved The Supremes, The Jacksons (with a special fondness for Michael and Janet), Prince, and Teena Marie—whom she would humorously declare “the only white artist accepted by the Black culture.” That was Velma—honest, funny, and unapologetically herself. She loved to sing and dance, often bringing joy and laughter to those around her. She also had a deep curiosity about the world—enjoying history, researching family ancestry, and learning about different cultures. A quiet but cherished pastime was her love for British films, where she may have picked up her fondness for tea. These were the special layers of Velma—some seen by many, others reserved for those who truly knew her.

Faith and Church Life
Velma was a lifelong member of First Institutional Baptist Church in Phoenix, Arizona, where she was nurtured spiritually under the leadership of Dr. Warren H. Stewart Sr. (Emeritus) and Pastor Robert Nesby. From an early age, her parents instilled in her a strong foundation of faith and a personal relationship with God. Her love for gospel music grew from this foundation, and she found joy and inspiration in artists such as The Clark Sisters, Fred Hammond, and traditional gospel spirituals.

Family and Love
Velma was the heart and historian of her family—the one who remembered every birthday, every milestone, and every story worth preserving. She took pride in keeping the family’s history alive, ensuring that no name or memory would ever be forgotten. She fiercely loved and protected her family. Though the youngest, she was often the one others turned to for advice, wisdom, and understanding. She embraced younger generations with grace and without judgment, always offering guidance with love.

In her early years Velma was married to Jimmie L. Colter, Jr., and from this union came her greatest treasures—her four daughters: Krystle, Klarissa, Kendra, and Brandi. In her later years she met and married the love of her life E. Henry who preceded her in death.

Her legacy continues through her seven grandchildren: Jadyn, Zamari, Zaliah, Za’Mya, Zarayah, Zeleke, and Kadence, all of whom brought her immense pride and joy.

The Legacy
Velma was preceded in death by her parents, James and Colesta Cooke; her sister, Brenda Rochelle Cooke; and her brother, Tyrone Marcellous Cooke.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving sisters, Carolyn Joan Cooke-Malone (Art) and Denise Diane Cooke-Washington (Elijah); her daughters, Krystle, Klarissa, Kendra, and Brandi; her grandchildren; and her bonus daughters, Kambriel, N’Tricia, and Tuesday, along with a host of extended family and friends.

Velma’s life was one of love, laughter, resilience, and faith. She will be deeply missed, yet her spirit lives on in the memories she created, the lessons she taught, and the love she gave so freely.

As a family, we now carry forward her legacy. We honor her by continuing to uphold the values she instilled—love, unity, strength, and remembrance. We accept the mantle as keepers of our family’s history, just as she so faithfully was.
