My Life Story

I was a winter baby born on January 21, 1986, in Phoenix, Arizona to Ardell Howard.  My mother worked hard to provide a boy’s life for me in this desert environment, a dry contrast to the metropolitan city she’d previously called home.  Her discipline was needed for my rambunctious spirit, and her hand (and rod) kept me in line long enough to one day have a fascinating and adventurous life as an adult.

Mesa, Arizona was home for most of my life.  The people I first called “friend” grew up with me through the Mesa Public Schools system where I attended Emerson Elementary School and Carson Junior High.  If I wasn’t out riding my bikes, then I could be found with my Boy Scout Troop 596.  They taught me how to live in the woods, and I kept on fishing as an adult.  I even earned my Rifle Shooting Merit Badge and spent my fair share of time on the range with my mom and friends.  Puberty was kind to me and sharpened my good looks and curly locks.  I was well known by the girls on campus by the time I finished my classes at the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) and graduated from Westwood High School.  I’ve been giving Jamie Foxx a run for his money for years!

I had the driving bug that was pervasive in my family.  I pursued my CDL and joined the ranks of my uncles who were heavy-duty equipment operators.  You might have played with a Tonka truck as a kid, but I drove it through the city.  Tractor trailers, garbage trucks and cement trucks became my life blood.  I mastered every vehicle I drove which ensured that I became a prominent employee everywhere I worked.  But big trucks weren’t the only impression my uncles made on my life.  It didn’t take long for Harley Davidson and Honda motorcycles to enter the scene.  I’m sure I gave my mother a few miniature heart attacks doing tricks on my bikes, but I never fell off and always wore my helmet.

God has always been the center of my life.  My mother instilled her everlasting faith in me.  She raised me in the faith community, and I grew up as a member of Holy Temple Church of God in Christ.  It was in this house where I developed my own relationship with the Lord, learned His word, and set it on my heart.  It was there where I developed my artistic talents by supporting the music ministry in the choir, on the keys and on the drum set.  “Where’s the little boy from Holy Temple who can sing?”  Well, that was me.  Singing for the Lord allowed me to land a spot in the Phoenix Boys Choir who I sang with for three seasons.  Years spent in the choir box with the Sunshine Band led me to perform on multiple stages across the Valley.  No matter what I did in my life, I never stopped singing for and praising the Lord.

As much as I loved my older sister Nikki Hicks, I always wanted more siblings.  My mother made it clear that eight was not her fate.  God blessed me with a squad of mini-me’s thanks to our family’s strong genetics.  My favorite neighborhood became Fatherhood.  This took centerstage and ordered my steps.  My best memories are of the time I spent with my children.  Each of them owns a piece of my heart and are the greatest piece of my legacy.  Jordan, Julian, Mahkai, Bennett, Lilly and Zaria should know you are the best part of me, and I will love each of you beyond the end of time.
